My family would starve if I didn't menu plan. I am not a big fan of Cooking Light though. I tried that magazine for a 1 year subscription, but their recipes always seem to have at least one completely off-the-wall ingredient that I have trouble getting enthusiastic about. I don't want to buy a jar of something I've never heard of, only use half of it for the recipe, and find the other half sprouting in the back of my fridge a few months from now. I have yet to find a favorite cooking magazine.
Gotta find a local friend who is a crazy cook....and borrow the weird ingredient from him/her. I started off that way, and now my pantry isn't complete w/out hoisen, sambal oelek, sriracha, oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, or fish sauce.
Every couple of months, I hit a grocery store in south philly that has all that stuff CHEAP. Makes it easier to throw away if it isn't your thing.
p.s. Konbu and fish cakes....NOT my thing.
Oh, wow, I actually have oyster sauce, rice wine vinegar, and I seem to remember using fish sauce before. Don't know what the other three are. I remember the challenging hunt for oyster sauce... it took several grocery stores, and I lost several pounds following confused grocery store managers around and around their stores looking for it. So sometimes I use weird ingredients... I try...
